AUDIENCE RESEACH: EXIT POLL DATA

PRESENTATION ON EMAZE:

Below is a link to the main presentation I did on audience research. I based my audience research on films that were released very recently from the BFI website. https://app.emaze.com/@AOIWFTRL/audience-research

I have also conducted a presentation using EMAZE to clearly present my audience research: EMAZE PRESENTATION

CASE STUDY: TORTOISE IN LOVE

I did some research on how the BFI Print and Advertising Fund help a small, crowd-sourced film to gain distribution. Its story is told HERE

As I am making a low budget, independent film myself, it was interesting to see how the film producer went about getting the film released.

HERE  IS A LINK TO THE TRAILER.

Tom, gardener at the big house, is not a fast mover with women. In fact he's glacially slow. When beautiful Polish au pair Anya arrives for the summer, Tom falls for her catastrophically like the felling of one of the giant trees he cares for in the manicured grounds.

SOCIAL GROUPS FOR MY FILM OPENING

MY SOCIAL GROUPS

For this task I am asked to consider my age group for the film opening that my group are doing and to consider the following questions:

1: WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL GROUPS REPRESENTED IN TERMS OF GENDER, AGE, CLASS, RACE, OCCUPATION AND SEXUALITY ETC.

2: IS GENDER REPRESENTED IN A STEREOTYPICAL WAY E.G. A WOMAN AS PASSIVE, MEN AS DOMINANT?

3: WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER SOCIAL GROUPS?

4: HOW DOES THIS LINK INTO THE TARGET AUDIENCE?

I am going to show you a very close correlation to our film and will explain the relevance in deeper context.

SHUTTER ISLAND;

being the influence of our film idea it has great relevance to our film for a number of reasons.

FIRSTLY:

The era of this film is very similar to our film, but this is not the major reason why I use this film as an example. In our film we want to divulge and express horror in the most gruesome way possible. Shutter Island portrays the horror that we want to show in our film. The protagonist of the film who is played by Leonardo DiCaprio plays a U.S. Marshall. Teddy Daniels, who is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from the hospital of the criminally insane.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The age certificate for this film is an 18. The main reason being is because our film shares some common ground with 'SHUTTER ISLAND'. We would like for our audiences to be deeply drawn into our film and I think we will succeed as many teenagers today are interested in films of this genre. This film received an 8.1 out of 10 on IMDB.

EVALUATION QUESTION 5 ATTRACTING AND ADDRESSING AUDIENCES

How did you attract/address your audience?

Q.5 requires you to think about marketing your product.

  • use Slideshare
  • You should design the mock-up of a website for your product and explain what would be on it by referencing an actual film / magazine website.
  • Mock up the home page using a still from your film / cover from your magazine, with 'links' to Facebook, Twitter, dates of release, key personnel.
For An Eye for Danger

The first slide in PowerPoint would say in order to attract our audience, we used the same techniques that a professional distribution company would create:

  • poster for P & A
  • film website
  • Facebook page
  • Twitter feed.
All these platforms are linked, creating a synergistic whole.

The second slide would say:

The key visual code here is the haunting stare of the victim. Thriller film audiences would react to this arresting image with its direct address and engagement with the audience. The image embodies the film title An Eye For Danger visually. It clearly signals the genre. The trail of red connotes blood, hinting at violence. The eye’s colour has been enhanced in Photoshop to beautify the victim and engage the audience’s interest.

The third slide would say: (write about film website)

      DISTRIBUTION: THE HUNGER GAMES

To track how distribution publicised the Hunger Games (directed by Gary Ross-2012)

Movie poster doubles as a missing persons poster.
QR code in the corner of the poster which directly links the person in the website of the movie.

The website gives instruction and will enter you into a raffle.
1st place gets VIP premier tickets.

Here are some screen shots that I took of the presentation I did on: DISTRIBUTION: THE HUNGER GAMES.

      PLANNING: TREATMENT

      Film Title: Lights Out!

      PLOT IDEAS:
      • As private detectives investigating disappearance
      • Old fashioned projector, projecting something.
      • Never seen the main threat of the movie.
      • Horror conveyed through shadows, first person perspective.
      • Vinyl player.
      • Police decide not to help the woman.
      • The main area we will film is in an asylum where it looks completely abandoned and derelict.
      • Moving deeper into the plot the detective, when breaking into the asylum, uncovers the terrifying secrets within the asylum.
      • And in the asylum we see an old fashioned nurse who is experimenting on the missing person who we find in the asylum to be restrained. As result of this, the person is trying to expose the reality of the asylum.
      STORYLINE:

The time period of this film is 1959 and people are still recovering from the abhorrent events of the Second World War. The young woman has her husband taken away from her. A detective played by (Ollie MacNaughton) is hired to try and find her husband's whereabouts.

For the Asylum where the husband has escaped, this is the kind of surrounding and setting we are trying to portray for our film in order to correlate with the genre.

      NORTHERN MICHIGAN ASYLUM:

This is exactly what we are looking for the asylum, very narrow corridors, creating darkness and mystery like it has been abandoned for years to really give that edge to it.

      THE DETECTIVE LOOK

For the detective, who is being played by (Ollie Macnaughton) we discussed as a group what the detective should look like. Like a typical 1950's detective fits in with the film it is set in. We were looking for a common detective hat, a long trench coat and a sharp suit underneath. This idea is influenced by Leonardo DiCaprio in "Shutter Island".

      PLANNING LOCATION RECCE

I took a number of photos for my location recce which best suited our genre for our film we will be making in due course:

      RESEARCH: HOW BRANDS PROFILE AUDIENCES

      INTRODUCTION, MAIN TASK:

For this task I will be establishing how brands target their audience in order to distribute my own film  for my AS production.

I will be using numerous websites and various applications in order for me to complete my task to the best of my ability.

I will be using various strategies for my task such as:

      • Facebook
      • The Internet
      • Various websites such as Sky or Capital FM.
      • I would also produce film posters similar to those from my favourite films.

      TARGET AUDIENCE:

The very important aspect for this task to consider identifying my target audience.

I need to consider whether the audience would be restricted to teenagers or whether this should be targeted for a wider appeal in terms of age group. I would also need to determine which audience is likely to be the most receptive, that is British focused or a global audience.

THE IMPORTANT TASK IN MY OPINION IS SETTING A SCENE THAT THE TARGET AUDIENCE WILL FIND VERY EYE CATCHING WHICH WILL DRAW THEIR ATTENTION TO MY PRODUCTION. FOR INSTANCE, ENTICE THE AUDIENCE WITH AN ENGAGING STORYLINE WHICH WILL LURE THE INTEREST OF AS MANY VIEWERS AS POSSIBLE REGARDLESS OF AGE AND GENDER.

      RADIO AUDIENCES:

I did some research at Ottawa start@blogspot.co.uk, which gives the overall share percentages from a large variety of stations. These numbers include all listeners ages 12 and upwards, Monday to Sunday from 5:00am to 1:00am, measured between  March 3rd and April 27th.

Therefore, my main audience must carefully be construed by the following

      • AGE
      • ETHNICITY
      • GENDER/GROUP
      • REGION/NATIONALITY

      SUITS OPENING SEQUENCE

      THE OPENING SEQUENCE:

The opening sequence of the TV show 'SUITS' to me is very eccentric and I find it to be very creative and amusing. I can tell by the music that this show presents a lot of harmony and averts from any other aspect associated with violence or anything of that nature.

The first scene we see of the sequence is a bird's eye view of a city, with the traffic in fast motion, with the camera framed and fixated looking down at the city. We also see an animation which changes the colour from a blue colour to a red colour.

After this shot we get to see an actor riding a bicycle alongside a tracking shot followed by a close-up shot of the man's face, which shows him smiling. We can also use this scene as evidence to suggest that the show is more geared towards a comedy genre. In my opinion, music portrays a massive role with the mood of a film or other moving image production.

      ISTOPMOTION

      PRELIMINARY

      THE PRELIMINARY EXERCISE:

For our preliminary exercise we decided to create a little video of a comedy genre

      PLOT AND CASTING:

The plot of the video is based on a story where a boy, played by (Ollie MacNaughton), decided to become lazy at school and decide not to focus on his studies which as a result of this, got some poor academic results. The dad, played by me (Marcus Couling), decides that the only cause of action is to discipline his child and express his anger and fustration.

Although the genre of this film is supposed to be comedy, we thought that maybe creating unobvious humour to show that the dad is not supposed to be funny. The boy on the other hand is supposed to be sarcastic with his father and does not seem to take anything seriously.

When filming our preliminary film we used a tripod to ensure a stability of the camera. Whilst filming we made sure we were following filming guidelines, demonstrating an understanding of the new and different terms like shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. When we had finished filming we carefully picked out the clips that we wanted to use and edited them accordingly. We used a few sound effects and some music at the end. We got some promising results and as a group we were happy with what we produced.

Click HERE to view our preliminary video.

       WHAT I LEARNT:

My personal experience when making the film was to make an authentic and effective movie. I needed to use a tripod which allowed us to carefully yet effectively use various camera angles without any shake. The second thing that I learned about making the film was the meaning behind each camera shot. For instance, how a low angle shot can help to portray sorrow and sadness and can entice the viewer and dictate to the audience the meanings behind the angles without words, but instead depicting it through emotions visually.

REVIEWS: I received a comment from a viewer that I think would be relevant to put on my blog:

      MEDIA STUDIES FILM QUOTES

In this first sequence, there's a vast majority of screenshots and glimpses of scenes from blockbuster films. (Lock distributor,) is attracting and addresses the audience in a variety of ways.

      • Fast moving
      • Audience appeal.
      • Numbers
      • Critical thinking

        Mark Batey

      ·      Chief executive, film distribution association of the FDA.
      ·      Market place very strategic.  Film distributor’s job, to deliver to the audience and draw
them into the film, which therefore creates revenue.
      ·      Sony, Disney and Warner Bros
      ·      The most distributed business in film. Have other companies linked to them, I.E, cinemas, channels, and vertical distribution system.  The big 6: paramount, Pixar, 20th century fox, Sony, Disney and Warner Bros.
Help with film distributor: You usually make film festivals like Sundance.

      Lionsgate, Metrodome and Momentum

      Example of independent distributor.

Most successful distributor is by getting a trailer watched by the population, because you are selling the audience and the experience of the film.

      Official selection of film distributors:
      SXSW
      NEW DIRECTORS, NEW FILMS.
      Sundance film festival

What is the genre of the film?

      USP: Unique selling point.

One unique selling point is the actors.

      Target audience

      • 15-24.
      • Piracy is a very big issue, the FDA do their best to expand their awareness about piracy.

      Niche audiences:
      • Not very big audiences.
      • Art-house cinemas.
      • Very few cinema spaces.

WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAY BRIEF SUMMARY

      PLOT:

      • What we did on our holiday is a BBC British comedy starring (David Tennant), (Billy Connolly) and (Rosamund Pike). Its release date is the 26th September 2014.
      • The plot is set with a man named (Doug McLeod), played by (David Tennant), and his wife (Abi), played by (Rosamund Pike), who unite following a separation to travel to see Doug's father (Gordie) (Billy Connolly) up in the Scottish Midlands for his birthday. (Doug and Abi) eventually get their three children (Lottie) (Emilia Jones) (Mickey) (Bobby Smalldridge) and (Jess) (Harriet Turnbull) out of the house and go on a long road trip.

The certificate for this film is a 12A, therefore the film will appeal to audiences 12 years and above, however, people viewing the film at 12 years of age will need to be accompanied by an adult. As such, this is a film largely aimed at families.

The main institution that is spreading the word about this film is mainly the BBC, broadcasting in many newspapers and websites to try and promote the film to draw audiences in.  Also a reviewer named (Himanshu S). suggested that the film “Explores the meaning of life and suggests how best to live and love”. Himanshu S. Another institution spreading the word on this film is the Daily Mail. Film critic (David Aldridge) said it was “Warm, Witty and Delightful, a real treat”. Another film critic named (Baz Bamigboye) also from the Daily Mail said it was “An enormously entertaining heart-warmer”.

What I learned from the trailer is that the film is going to be a witty and great fun exploration of family life and relatives. A film of this genre and with a 12A rating will appeal to a very broad ranging potential audience. The humour in this film, shown in the trailer, is fun and very light-hearted. The backdrop is wonderful country scenery which gives a true British flavour to the film. (Billy Connolly) is starring in the film which also suggests that the film is going to be funny. I also found from the trailer that, although the film is rated a 12A, there are some scenes where they exceed the 12A rating to the maximum, for example, the son of (David Tenant) in the film references a lot of swearing but only uses the acronym versions to maintain a sensible allowance of language for the 12A rating. Therefore, this suggests to me that some scenes may be unsuitable for younger viewers, hence the age rating being a 12A, although the acronyms for the swearing is used in a content context.
