3 DISTRIBUTION

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Films are distributed by film distributors who are responsible for all aspects of attracting and addressing the target audience for the film.

In order to study film distribution, I undertook research in a various ways and eventually decided that our group (Vertigo Films) would be an ideal distributor for our small independent movie.

I visited the British film institute on the 11th February 2015 and have studied the whole aspect of distribution due to the research conducted. The Film institute was presented by (Matthew Hall), who was discussing the subject of UK cinema, audiences and institutions with the idea of artwork, multiplex and crossover films. Looking at how they differ from one another. After a discussion with my group with confirmed that the most logical distributor to study was (Vertigo).

I looked up the Vertigo website where they published their mission statement consisting of the following: "the company's mission is to distribute commercial driven independent cinema and since inception, it has produced 28 films and distributed a further 35."

I thought it would be logical and realistic to study Vertigo because our main audience is in the (UK independence circle). Vertigo helps launch new film makers and talent to help them get the career they need which will inevitably prolong a successful career. (The Nicolas Winding Refn) film "BRONSON" was an excellent film of (Tom Hardy), who plays (Charles Bronson(, formerly known as (Michael Peterson Rein) acting the life of Britain's most violent prisoner. This film was created under the Vertigo label. "STREET DANCE 3D" was the biggest UK independent DVD of all time. "MONSTERS" was a low budget film under the monitoring of Vertigo which is aimed towards an adult audience but still made a successful realease.

My first port of call was the Film Distributors Association website www.launchingfilms.com

In order to come to a better understanding of how distribution works, I studied a number of case studies such as how "THE HUNGER GAMES" directed by (Gary Ross) was distributed.

For example, I noticed that the movie poster specifically focuses on the main character in the film and the main object involved in her succeeding.
The QR code in the corner of the poster directly links the person to the website of the movie.

The website gives instruction and will enter you into a raffle.

1st place gets VIP premier tickets.

2nd place gets a tour of the studio meets the actors.

3rd place wins a personalised movie console of their choice.

To enter the prize draw you have to take a selfie with the poster, scan the QR code that takes you to the website and then upload the selfie to the movie website.

Here are some screen shots that I took of the presentation I did on: DISTRIBUTION: THE HUNGER GAMES.

Incidentally, as I was at this stage experimenting with new technologies, I also turned this research as an animate, which gave new life to my lacklustre presentation. Here is the link

ANIMOTO

As we are producing a small, independent film, we also investigated how the film "TORTOISE IN LOVE" reached distribution.

INDEPENDENT DISTRIBUTION CASE STUDY: TORTOISE IN LOVE:

I did some research on how the BFI Print and Advertising Fund help a small, crowd-sourced film to gain distribution. The story can be read HERE

As I am making a low budget, independent film myself, it was interesting to see how the film producer went about getting the film released being somewhat similar.

It was filmed on a very low budget of (£500 000) and was an incredibly small film. However, it had its first viewing at the Cannes festival in 2011 and in the following year received its world premier, where the cast and crew made their entrance on tractors, which was the setting of the film. It was viewed in public halls and gained a respectable amount of money.

If I was put in this predicament, I would probably choose (IFF), due to it being an international film festival with screenings and awards. This would be a great way to help get our film noticed and help peoples talents get broadcasted. (Tortoise In Love) had this opportunity as it was shown at the Cannes festival which is the most prestigious movie festival in the world.

WHAT DO DISTRIBUTORS DO IN ORDER TO PROMOTE THEIR PRODUCT?:

The main priority of the distributors is the marketing of the movie. They also set out the release dates and where the film is going to be shown. For instance, a national or worldwide release. They also handle the majority of the box office revenue.

Films can be distributed through a variety of different ways. For instance:

  • Posters
  • Advertising
  • Social media sites
  • Networks
I went to the (FDA) website and found out that in-cinema trailers are the most powerful promotional technique because the message is being addressed to their target audience. They are able to witness the powerful promotion in a short period of time which gets the adrenalin pumping before their actual movie starts. The size of the cinema screen also reflects the impact that the promotion is intending on having on the audience and impacts highly on their distribution.

The screenshot above shows a video clip that I saw, giving me a better insight of the film industry and the responsibility of producers of trying to entice the audiences into buying their product and keep them interested as much as possible.

WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION?:

DEFINITION: Film distribution is the process to which a movie is made available to watch for an audience by the film distributor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_distribution

Film production is a key element to entice the audience to watch your film. Distributors are likely to use different means of technology which will help promote the film which will then cause synergy to draw people to go and watch the movie. Film distributors also arrange interviews, screenings, DVD rights adding to their distribution list.

  1. Look at the question: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
You haven't answered it. I have talked to you several times about this in class. Get it done!
