EVALUATION QUESTION 5 ATTRACTING AND ADDRESSING AUDIENCES

How did you attract/address your audience?

Q.5 requires you to think about marketing your product.

  • use Slideshare
  • You should design the mock-up of a website for your product and explain what would be on it by referencing an actual film / magazine website.
  • Mock up the home page using a still from your film / cover from your magazine, with 'links' to Facebook, Twitter, dates of release, key personnel.
For An Eye for Danger

The first slide in PowerPoint would say in order to attract our audience, we used the same techniques that a professional distribution company would create:

  • poster for P & A
  • film website
  • Facebook page
  • Twitter feed.
All these platforms are linked, creating a synergistic whole.

The second slide would say:

The key visual code here is the haunting stare of the victim. Thriller film audiences would react to this arresting image with its direct address and engagement with the audience. The image embodies the film title An Eye For Danger visually. It clearly signals the genre. The trail of red connotes blood, hinting at violence. The eye’s colour has been enhanced in Photoshop to beautify the victim and engage the audience’s interest.

The third slide would say: (write about film website)

      DISTRIBUTION: THE HUNGER GAMES

To track how distribution publicised the Hunger Games (directed by Gary Ross-2012)

Movie poster doubles as a missing persons poster.
QR code in the corner of the poster which directly links the person in the website of the movie.

The website gives instruction and will enter you into a raffle.
1st place gets VIP premier tickets.

Here are some screen shots that I took of the presentation I did on: DISTRIBUTION: THE HUNGER GAMES.

      PLANNING: TREATMENT

      Film Title: Lights Out!

      PLOT IDEAS:
      • As private detectives investigating disappearance
      • Old fashioned projector, projecting something.
      • Never seen the main threat of the movie.
      • Horror conveyed through shadows, first person perspective.
      • Vinyl player.
      • Police decide not to help the woman.
      • The main area we will film is in an asylum where it looks completely abandoned and derelict.
      • Moving deeper into the plot the detective, when breaking into the asylum, uncovers the terrifying secrets within the asylum.
      • And in the asylum we see an old fashioned nurse who is experimenting on the missing person who we find in the asylum to be restrained. As result of this, the person is trying to expose the reality of the asylum.
      STORYLINE:

The time period of this film is 1959 and people are still recovering from the abhorrent events of the Second World War. The young woman has her husband taken away from her. A detective played by (Ollie MacNaughton) is hired to try and find her husband's whereabouts.

For the Asylum where the husband has escaped, this is the kind of surrounding and setting we are trying to portray for our film in order to correlate with the genre.

      NORTHERN MICHIGAN ASYLUM:

This is exactly what we are looking for the asylum, very narrow corridors, creating darkness and mystery like it has been abandoned for years to really give that edge to it.

      THE DETECTIVE LOOK

For the detective, who is being played by (Ollie Macnaughton) we discussed as a group what the detective should look like. Like a typical 1950's detective fits in with the film it is set in. We were looking for a common detective hat, a long trench coat and a sharp suit underneath. This idea is influenced by Leonardo DiCaprio in "Shutter Island".

      RESEARCH: HOW BRANDS PROFILE AUDIENCES

      INTRODUCTION, MAIN TASK:

For this task I will be establishing how brands target their audience in order to distribute my own film  for my AS production.

I will be using numerous websites and various applications in order for me to complete my task to the best of my ability.

I will be using various strategies for my task such as:

      • Facebook
      • The Internet
      • Various websites such as Sky or Capital FM.
      • I would also produce film posters similar to those from my favourite films.

      TARGET AUDIENCE:

The very important aspect for this task to consider identifying my target audience.

I need to consider whether the audience would be restricted to teenagers or whether this should be targeted for a wider appeal in terms of age group. I would also need to determine which audience is likely to be the most receptive, that is British focused or a global audience.

THE IMPORTANT TASK IN MY OPINION IS SETTING A SCENE THAT THE TARGET AUDIENCE WILL FIND VERY EYE CATCHING WHICH WILL DRAW THEIR ATTENTION TO MY PRODUCTION. FOR INSTANCE, ENTICE THE AUDIENCE WITH AN ENGAGING STORYLINE WHICH WILL LURE THE INTEREST OF AS MANY VIEWERS AS POSSIBLE REGARDLESS OF AGE AND GENDER.

      RADIO AUDIENCES:

I did some research at Ottawa start@blogspot.co.uk, which gives the overall share percentages from a large variety of stations. These numbers include all listeners ages 12 and upwards, Monday to Sunday from 5:00am to 1:00am, measured between  March 3rd and April 27th.

Therefore, my main audience must carefully be construed by the following

      • AGE
      • ETHNICITY
      • GENDER/GROUP
      • REGION/NATIONALITY

      SUITS OPENING SEQUENCE

      THE OPENING SEQUENCE:

The opening sequence of the TV show 'SUITS' to me is very eccentric and I find it to be very creative and amusing. I can tell by the music that this show presents a lot of harmony and averts from any other aspect associated with violence or anything of that nature.

The first scene we see of the sequence is a bird's eye view of a city, with the traffic in fast motion, with the camera framed and fixated looking down at the city. We also see an animation which changes the colour from a blue colour to a red colour.

After this shot we get to see an actor riding a bicycle alongside a tracking shot followed by a close-up shot of the man's face, which shows him smiling. We can also use this scene as evidence to suggest that the show is more geared towards a comedy genre. In my opinion, music portrays a massive role with the mood of a film or other moving image production.

      PRELIMINARY

      THE PRELIMINARY EXERCISE:

For our preliminary exercise we decided to create a little video of a comedy genre

      PLOT AND CASTING:

The plot of the video is based on a story where a boy, played by (Ollie MacNaughton), decided to become lazy at school and decide not to focus on his studies which as a result of this, got some poor academic results. The dad, played by me (Marcus Couling), decides that the only cause of action is to discipline his child and express his anger and fustration.

Although the genre of this film is supposed to be comedy, we thought that maybe creating unobvious humour to show that the dad is not supposed to be funny. The boy on the other hand is supposed to be sarcastic with his father and does not seem to take anything seriously.

When filming our preliminary film we used a tripod to ensure a stability of the camera. Whilst filming we made sure we were following filming guidelines, demonstrating an understanding of the new and different terms like shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. When we had finished filming we carefully picked out the clips that we wanted to use and edited them accordingly. We used a few sound effects and some music at the end. We got some promising results and as a group we were happy with what we produced.

Click HERE to view our preliminary video.

       WHAT I LEARNT:

My personal experience when making the film was to make an authentic and effective movie. I needed to use a tripod which allowed us to carefully yet effectively use various camera angles without any shake. The second thing that I learned about making the film was the meaning behind each camera shot. For instance, how a low angle shot can help to portray sorrow and sadness and can entice the viewer and dictate to the audience the meanings behind the angles without words, but instead depicting it through emotions visually.

REVIEWS: I received a comment from a viewer that I think would be relevant to put on my blog:
